The Global Music studies will expand at the Sibelius Academy from August 2016 to offer two degree programmes in Global Music, a 5.5-year and 2.5-year programme. The 5.5-year programme includes both Bachelor and Master’s degrees, while the 2.5-year programme (GLOMAS) continues to be offered as a joint Master’s degree between Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, Finland and the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, Denmark. Both programmes are taught in English and are open to musicians from a diverse range of musical and cultural and backgrounds.

A record number of applications was submitted during this application round with more than 80 people applying for the studies!

The Global Music Degree is an innovative programme, which embraces cultural diversity and aims to educate multi-skilled, innovative musicians and pedagogues with a strong sense of global responsibility. Students will develop the ability to communicate, collaborate and lead in a wide range of musical, cultural and socially-engaged contexts.

The expansion of the programme is very exciting development on many levels. In the past, the programme has had many applicants from around the world interested in the Master’s programme, who were unable to apply due to the fact that they had not had access to Bachelor level studies in their own countries. The Global Music 5.5-year programme will now provide a pathway for these applicants.

Alongside musical development, a big part of the programme is about developing the skills needed for intercultural communication and understanding. There is no doubt that these skills have become essential for our society and the wider world.

With transcultural collaboration at the heart of the programme, applicants are welcome from diverse cultural and musical backgrounds. Musicians may apply on any main instrument, voice or composition, including traditional instruments from around the world. Applicants with a background in other art forms may also be considered for the programme, provided they have a sufficient level of musical skills.

The next round of applications will open January 2017.
